Investigating and Analyzing the Stylistic Function of Verbs in Dehkhoda’s Socio-Political Poetry

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The verb, by virtue of incorporating the elements of tense, person, voice, and mood, serves not only as the core of the predicate but also as one of the most significant constituents of the sentence in stylistic analysis at the syntactic layer. The examination and analysis of verbs in the works of poets and writers can reveal hidden dimensions of the text to the reader. Dehkhoda is among the great poets of the Constitutional era, whose poetic dimension has received comparatively little attention. Despite the abundance of studies on the works of Ali-Akbar Dehkhoda, it appears that no research has yet been conducted on the examination and analysis of grammatical issues in his socio-political poetry.
METHODOLOGY: The present study was carried out with the aim of analyzing the stylistic function of verbs in Dehkhoda’s socio-political poetry in order to answer the following questions: 1) What are the key characteristics of verbs in Dehkhoda’s socio-political poetry? 2) What are their frequency and statistical distribution? 3) What relationship exists between the dominant verbal patterns and the socio-political content of Dehkhoda’s poems? The research was conducted in a descriptive-analytical manner, combining quantitative and qualitative content analysis methods. The statistical population of the study consists solely of those poems that possess a socio-political dimension; poems written in Turkish are excluded from the scope of this research.
FINDINGS: In this study, using the method of complete enumeration, 1,609 verbs in Dehkhoda’s socio-political poetry were examined and analyzed. In the quantitative and qualitative content analysis section, verbs were investigated along four dimensions—tense, person, voice, and mood—and after calculating frequencies and percentages, their connection with the ideational layer of these poems was analyzed. The findings indicate that the predominance of the present tense (979 verbs, 60.9%) and the indicative mood (1,327 verbs, 82.5%) represents poverty and corruption as a living event in Dehkhoda’s poetry. The use of the second-person singular (194 verbs, 12.1%) renders the discourse dialogue-oriented, while the dominance of active-voice verbs (1,563 verbs, 97.1%), together with predicative transitives (478 verbs, 29.7%) and direct-object transitives (563 verbs, 35%), transforms the text into an active instrument for socio-political criticism. Finally, the imperative mood (204 verbs, 12.7%) represents Dehkhoda’s endeavor to turn the passive audience into an active one.
CONCLUSION: Focusing on the verb as one of the principal axes of the syntactic layer of language, this study sought to analyze the link between grammatical choices and Dehkhoda’s socio-political intentions. The results demonstrate that Dehkhoda’s grammatical selections at the verbal level are entirely systematic and serve his critical perspective and socio-political satire.
